We recommend always paying in the local currency, such as EUR in Italy or JPY in Japan.
Abroad, a card terminal or ATM may offer to charge you in USD instead. If you accept, the terminal or ATM operator sets the exchange rate, and its markup is usually several times higher than our 1% foreign exchange fee. If you choose the local currency, Visa converts the price to USD, and our 1% fee applies.
The screen may show the amount in both currencies, or ask whether to accept a conversion. Choose the local currency, or decline the conversion. Some online shops offer the same choice at checkout.
